Before closing, some background information on Johan Tahon, the artist who created TWINS: Johan Tahon was born in 1965 in Menen (Belgium). He lives and works in Sint-Denijs-Boekel (Belgium) and Istanbul (TR).
He studied sculpture at the Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1994, Johan Tahon regularly presents his works in Belgium as well as abroad. After various presentations in his own Studio, he experienced his first breakthrough following the exhibition De Rode Poort at the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art in 1996 (curator Jan Hoet, Documenta 9). Tahon has participated in internationally acclaimed exhibitions.
In Germany Tahon has become well known through solo exhibitions, in the Kunstverein Schwerte, the Gerhard Marcks Haus in Bremen and different presentations in Berlin, to name but a few. Tahon's sculptures are also part of important public as well as private collections.
For Johan Tahon, creating a work of art means taking up an extremely personal search for the human-being and his or her needs and requirements, at the same time depicting the unalterable solitariness of human existence. Characteristic of his work is the quest for a place that makes existence possible.
Tahon expresses and touches upon a fundamental need to seek spirituality due to human insignificance in relation to the universe or human imperfection in relation to divinity.
With his sculptures, Tahon fathoms the dark, fleeting and unquantifiable dimensions of existence. They are attempts to reconcile an ungraspable universe, yes existence itself, with his own incomprehesble universe, his own being. Microcosm and macrocosm seem perpetually to exchange places.
